Skerbeck Family Carnival has a total of 26 available rides, but this year will only be operating seventeen at the Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair. Skerbeck said that at least every seven years each ride is given a facelift, repainted, rewired and made a-new. Examples range from a "kid ride that was manufactured in 1958 all the way to some or the more spectacular stuff that was manufactured as recently as 2017.” The ages of the rides at the Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair vary greatly, according to Skerbeck. “Every day, I have a group of six guys who have about 200 years of cumulative experience tasked with checking each device (with a pretty rigorous check list).” said Skerbeck. “They are looking at things as simple as garbage that may make someone trip, or a burr on a fence that might scrape somebody’s hand, kids doing silly things all the way to mechanical issues with the rides.” Skerbeck said he is looking at safety on a daily basis. “The people that operate our fair are approved by the state every year,” Shaw said. “We get inspected by the state of Michigan’s amusement safety department each year (under the Department of Agriculture),” said Skebeck.Īgnes Shaw, manager of the Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair, concurred. Skerbeck has more than a decade’s worth of formal safety training obtaining a national safety certification involving multiple seminars and courses on the subject.īut the main safety training, said Skerbeck, has been through a lifetime of carnival experience he started working rides when he was 12 years old.
